Sunroom Kits
If you are a confident DIYer, then sunroom kits will cut the cost of labor for you.
What is the cost for shipping?
Depends on the sunroom kit company. Some charge for shipping, some don't.
Installation time
It will depend on the size of the sunroom and roof style. Two people can expect on average two to three days (25 to 35 hours) for a smaller, single-sloped sunroom. A larger, gabled sunroom will take two people about four to six days (50-70 hours).
What is included with the kit?
All materials that you need come with the kit, including fasteners and sealants. You step-by-step instructions with illustrations, so you can easily construct your sunroom.
What isn't included?
Decking or concrete materials depending on your house structure.
Foundation
You can construct a sunroom on a deck or a level concrete base, as long as these meet local building requirements. Talk to your local building engineer or department if you are not sure about the suitability of your deck or patio. If it is not level, the area where the walls attach to the patio or deck need to be leveled using 2x6 boards to prepare the site. Instructions on how to do this are usually provided with the kit. The house wall to which the sunroom will attach should be straight.
You should consult with your local building department to determine if a permit is needed.
Are there only limited styles to choose from?
Sunroom kits come in standard ranges and companies will also customise for you.
Heating and cooling
Sunrooms can get hot, particularly without good ventilation. Installing windows, doors, and screens will keep a sunroom comfortable. You can heat or cool a sunroom, but you need to make that decision before you order the sunroom as this can influence the energy efficiency of the glass used. A local heating/cooling contractor can help you to select the best heating and/or cooling method.
Curtains and blinds
Blinds or a cover are not necessary unless you live in a hot climate. You can order tinted glass to reduce the heat build-up.
Electrical outlets
You can certainly add outlets. It is easiest to have these installed along the walls of the existing building. This is something you will need electrical experience for or get a licensed electrician to do.
Tools needed
You will need various hand tools including a rubber mallet, hammer, level, square, screwdrivers, driver snips, and tin tips. You will need a few power tools including a circular saw, drill (ideally, a good cordless drill), and a hammer drill if building on concrete. A ladder to reach the sunroom roof will be needed too. You may need a brake for bending trim coil and you can easily rent one.
Sample materials
Some kit companies will send you a sample package so that you can see the materials that come with the kit. Samples may include pieces of extrusions, roof panels and the installation manual.
Gutters
These are not required but you may wish to install gutters with downspouts. You can purchase these from a local building supplier or gutter contractor who can supply gutters to blend with your house.
