Decorating Small SpacesDecorating small spaces can seem to be a real challenge. Staying positive about what can be achieved can be a challenge too. Check out 50 home storage ideas for inspiration. For design and layout guidance on specific rooms:
Small spaces are not as hard to decorate as you might think. The trick is to be detailed when you decorate, because every item in the room becomes a focal point. Our eyes quickly move around a small room, therefore it works better to tailor the room as much as possible. Choose one piece of furniture as your focal point for a small room - perhaps a large mirror or artwork or a round table in a corner. You want to create an illusion of space. By choosing fewer large and bold furniture pieces, rather than many smaller ones, you can make a small room seem much bigger. It seems counter-intuitive, but design experts agree on this point. Avoid loud, bold-patterned or puffy furniture, and instead, go for slim and streamlined pieces. Form and functionIf you can, choose pieces that serve more than one purpose such as an ottomon that has storage and can also serve as a coffee table. Space savers Even small changes like converting a swinging door to an interior pocket door can give you back some space. Use walls as much as possible, installing floating shelves. Minimal objects Most of us like to personalize our rooms with ornaments and other items that give them character and surround us with things we like to look at. Small rooms look and feel better when they are uncluttered. One way to keep your small room personal and uncrowded is to rotate objects so you only display a few special items at a time...the others can be put away for a while in a cupboard. Another great look is concealed cabinets. Although expensive when tailor made, Ikea have affordable shevling and cabinets with doors and panels that conceal clutter and make a room look organized, uncluttered and streamlined. Low contrast When decorating small spaces, avoid bold or large patterns, and avoid strong contrast in wall colors. Low contrast helps a room look larger. You can have color...it's not necessary to paint the room all white or cream, but keep it the colors you choose in the same tone, and that means ceiling, walls and floor. A stark white ceiling against darker walls is too much contrast. To explain this idea further, if you choose orange, enhance it with complementary colors like chocolate brown, dark red or magenta. This will create a cozy atmosphere. Mirrors Mirrors can give an illusion of space and will reflect lighting in the room. You could go for a mirrored ceiling or a large mirror on one wall positioned to reflect a window. Lighting Rather than a centrally-positioned light fixture, halogen or lamps around the perimeter of a small room, lighting down the walls can give the illusion of pushing the walls out.
Long curtains lengthen the height of the room. Start curtains close to the ceiling and let them fall to the floor.
