Basement Design Ideas - Create A New Room

Your basement could be the source of a wonderful new living space. Great basement design ideas include converting it into a home fitness gym, home office playroom, art studio, home theater room, game room, basement wet bar, bedroom, wine cellar design, library or hobby room.

The hard work is already done, as your basement already has walls, a foundation and a ceiling, so finishing it can cost much less than an addition. You may even have some windows already in place.

There are a number of considerations when you plan your basement ideas:

Size
If you have a large basement, you could create a number of rooms - perhaps a bedroom and bathroom. This would involve erecting walls and dividers.

Ceiling
Ceiling height may be a big factor in choosing a design. Low ceilings can make the room look small and cave-like. Are there supports or posts? You will need to incorporate these into
your floor plan and basement design ideas. Do not plan to remove them!

Lighting
Being located at the bottom of your house, your basement may not have much natural light. Basements need to have artificial lighting, so you will need to consider whether you need to install or enhance electrical wiring to different parts of the basement. If the ceiling is low, you will want to open up the area by making it as light and bright as possible. Upward lighting can give make the basement appear larger. Fluorescent lights can make a basement look dim and should be avoided.

Ventilation
Basements typically do not have natural ventilation, so you will need to consider air conditioning or vents in your basement designs. You may be able to connect your existing furnace
and air conditioner to new duct work.

Flooring
Will you carpet the floors, tile or use hardwood? If you have low ceilings, keep colors light to open up the space.
