A basement makeover is not as hard as you may think. As long as you have access to plumbing and electrical outlets, you should be able to generate a space that is both pretty and functional. Modern upflush toilets make plumbing problems a thing of the past.

Basement bathrooms basics

If you have a bathroom facility in your basement now and want to remodel it, the first thing to do is create a remodeling plan and draw a floor plan. After that, you’ll need to measure the space and determine how much space you will need to install the fixtures. This is easy if everything fits, but if not, you will need to revise the design considering these questions:

Bathtub: How large should it be? Will it be convenient to take baths in your basement? Will you want heating if you install a tub?

Sink: Do you want a built-in vanity sink? Would you consider a hanging sink that is a little more expensive and harder to install?

Cabinets and storage area: Do you want these in a basement instead of your main bathroom? Will you have enough space for them?

Lighting: Most basement bathrooms don’t have windows. When you build a basement bathroom, lighting is one of the most important elements. Consider installing light bulb strips above the mirror and adding spotlights throughout the bathroom. A good bathroom remodeling tip is to install mirrors to maximise the space and create an illusion of more space.

Upflush toilets

Upflush toilets are ideal for a basement makeover. Basically, they flush your waste up. The contents of the toilet are first dropped into a discreet tank located behind or beside your toilet. A macerator with a grinding blade reduces the waste to a more manageable consistency. Then the waste is pumped up through a small pipe. Good upflush toilets complete this process when you flush the toilet.

Saniflo make two types of electrically-powered upflush toilets suitable for basement bathrooms. The Sani-Plus allows you to connect a sink or laundry drain to its small tank, making it a good choice for that basement bathroom. The Sani-Compact is a space saving model with a similar profile to a standard toilet.
